I don't have a smartphone. Just a phone that makes calls and texts. So now you know. I have officially come out. I am a nerd.

Me too. I have a piece of garbage pay-as-you go phone that I never turn on. I think you may have read my blog post, but my aversion to cell phones is a key reason my books are set in 1995. I have never sent a text in my life. Now you know. It's not just you

I don't have a smart phone either. Just a little flip phone. I did have a smart phone for a couple years, but I lost it last fall and decided not to replace it. The data fees really add up. I did like having the web at my fingertips and a GPS too. Having my email follow me around? Not so great.

But it's also not wanting to fiddle with a phone all day, like other people. I hate it when someone picks up their phone if we're having coffee or lunch. I find that rude. I always switch mine off if I'm meeting someone. I'm glad it's just not me.

I love my smartphone, but I set up a different email account to it that I use just for emergency emails and apps on the phone. Otherwise, it's my record of a lot of things, like I talk to Siri when I have writing ideas while I'm driving, and it's also my anywhere MP3 player. I listen to my book music playlists, audiobooks, and writing and foreign language podcasts.
I only use it with people if they ask me to find out something, but most of my friends are not so polite and will spend the whole time on their phone or tablet, and that does annoy me. The one exception is my dad, who doesn't speak to me when I go eat with him. He people watches. So I guess you don't need a phone to do stuff like that.

The ball-point pen it the most advanced piece of technology I've been able to fully master.

I'm reading this on my smart phone. If I'm one of the cool kids in the room, that's a sad indictment of the Pub.

I am a managing broker in a real estate office. I don't believe there's a way to do my job without a smart phone. However, I do take great satisfaction is shutting it off for long periods of time. Like on vacation next month, which can't arrive quickly enough!

Yeah, I would get another one if I could afford it. I am finally migrating toward having different email addresses for different parts of my life (writing, teaching, personal). Putting only the teaching address on the phone would allow me to keep up with work email on the go -- which is sort of expected, though I hate the tyranny of the "instant response" -- and not get bogged down in all the rest of the stuff. I like having a device that will allow me to look things up, listen to music, show photos to people (and take nice photos), read books, etc. Having a tool like Siri would be neat (I had an Android phone). One drawback to the smart phone was battery life. If I used the phone significantly, the charge wouldn't last out the day. If I ever get another, battery life will be a major criteria in choosing one.

You'd be surprised at how many people have forgotten how to use the ball-point pen. My old workplace had these wonderful pens, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to retract the point when I put them away. Eventually I just threw my hands up and decided every single one I picked up had to be broken. I still have a bunch of them. Great pens, except for that one thing that *always* breaks.

Even if I had a smart phone, I wouldn't be cool. I save a lot of money by having a pay-as-you-go TracFone. Technically, the phone supports texting, but if I could turn that off I would. The only texts I get are ads from TracFone.

Mine is pay as you go too. I text a lot, mainly with my kids. Bets way to keep in touch with them.
But I think you're cool, anyway, Daniel. Because cool to me is not caring whether you are or not.

I have to admit that I love my iPhone, although I can certainly understand the logic behind having just a standard phone that doesn't do anything else. I was lucky and got my iPhone through Virgin Mobile, which offers a no contract monthly plan for only $30. I get 300 minutes of talk time (which I never use), unlimited text, and 4G data for that price, so it really works for my needs.

My dad is one of those people that has a flip phone, and claims he doesn't understand why anyone would need a smartphone. But if he's around, he asks me to look up things on my iPhone on a regular basis.... I don't think I'd want him to get a smartphone, though. I'm still fielding questions about how to use Facebook, and he's been on Facebook for three years.

I got a Samsung Galaxy II or something a couple of years ago. It's pretty slick.

I've got a Gallaxy something as well, though I don't remember what generation. It's great. It even gets porn.
