Been having a conversation with another writer (not a member here), someone who suffers from serious depression. He can only really be creative when he's feeling quite low, he says -- but can't edit in that state. I agree. Sadness, grief, depression are no fit states to edit your work in. How could you see the good from the bad? It all looks bad... This is how so many artists end up destroying (or painting over) their work, how so many manuscripts go up in smoke. This sounds familiar - I've got pretty serious depression and anxiety problems. I don't know whether that helps me write. I certainly know there are times it doesn't. The weirdest thing for me is post-publishing depression. The run up to hitting publish is usually quite exciting, but each time the book is released I slip immediately into a bad place for some reason, for anything up to a month afterwards. Me too, Griff. I guess we're just eff'ed up

Lisa and Griff, that's when you come hang out with us here. And we'll send you our most stubborn WIPs to keep your mind off the post-pub slump. I will, anyway. 'Cause you guys actually finish books. P.S. FUCK! SHIT! DAMN! BUGGER! BLOODY HELL! I hope you other-side-of-the-ponders appreciate my effort to swear inclusively.

I can't write when sad or mad, as both of those emotional states require (for me) lots of alcohol. And I can't write drunk. Although I do sometimes get a decent idea when drunk. But then I forget to write it down, and so I forget it entirely, and then all I have is this weird, undefined shadow in my head of a good idea that once was but is no more.
But I digress.
My best stuff comes when I write from fear. I want to scare the reader. And I can only do that if I, myself, am scared.
But sometimes I write from a strict "butt in chair" place. No real emotion at all. That stuff is never my best.

You should move to Baltimore. You'd be scared for your life 24-7. Dude. Baltimore blows. I had a nice scholarship for my grad degree at UMBC. Turned it down because there was no way I was living in that city. I keep putting off a trip to the aquarium for my kid. I know she'd love it, but I can't stand the idea of going there...

So happy to see you. How are you? And how is the writing going?

Hi Suzy! Things are good. The kids give me about 30 minutes of peace each day, so I try to pound out 500 words. I can search for cover art, proofread, and design a cover with one hand, so I do those jobs while nursing the baby. All in all, I'm getting some stuff done, which is better than nothing. Things have changed here! Lots of new faces.

This is really going to help flesh out those characters we're basing on him. Fred is terrific hero source material. The funny thing is that I DID sort of use him! Can I confess that? I love that way he stands there and is all solid. My latest hero is just all big and solid like Fred, and I confess, I thought of that when I was making him up! (Ooh! Is this infidelity? Don't worry, Fred, I'm not stalking you, honest, and by the time I got to the juicy stuff, he was "my guy" and nobody else. Tell your wife to put the knife down. I just needed a solid guy in my head. And I remember something you said once about loving your wife that, in combination with the way you look, just made me go all "awwww," so I used that feeling.)
