I'm glad you guys found the thread useful. It seems weird, giving away all of that information, especially so early in my career, but I gave it a lot of thought. I think more people writing serials and writing them well will take away some of the stigma from them. I also think that every person's writing style is unique, and even if you asked two people to write an identical plot, the stories could be completely different. I don't think anyone could really copy what I could do, no more than I could copy any other author's work, so in the end, my primary competition is always myself. And 99¢ boxed sets. God, I can't stand them >_< Viola, you have inspired me to try a serial. I am in the last stage of editing #3 in my series. But a serial seems like a good idea too. I put $6.99 on my boxed sets. I think that's good value for three books of 70K words each. And it's selling well.

Yes. A lot of serials are chopped up books, which has given serials a bad rap. I honestly don't think authors begin writing a serial by saying 'I'm gonna chop up a novel so I can make lots of money!' There are a lot of reasons people write serials. Personally, I've just always been better at telling short stories. I hope that by laying out the structure of a serial, other authors can avoid the common pitfalls of serial writing, especially poorly structured endings.

Ooh, let me know how it goes!! Of course! I'm excited about it. It will be my project for the summer. You might wanna give your readers a heads up. I watched closely when Scalzi serialized his book, and there were some complaints. Nothing you couldn't calm their fears about, but I'd address it in some fashion. Check out the comments: io9.com/5924189/tor-will-serialize-john-scalzis-next-old-mans-war-novel-online

I know what you're saying, Fred. But I was going to do a brand new story. Not serialize my current work. I could write, say three 15K stories and link them together, but only publish when I have all three in the bag. I think this could take me about two months, including editing.

FIRST: So glad you are here Viola. You are my favorite new addition to KBoards and I think you are faboo.
SECOND: I'm writing a serial right now. Erotic romance. The overall arc of the whole series is she meets the love of her life in the first book, but the timing isn't right. So she has sexy times for a few books, growing, having experiences, all the while they keep popping up in each other's lives until the last book where they finally make it work. Each book will have a stand alone plot, a meet-up with the soul mate and a friendly cliffhanger that will (hopefully) entice the reader to continue. I'm approaching it like a television show. Shonda Rhimes is my HERO, if that gives anyone any insight.
My major dilemma right now is pricing....I'm a little conflicted. But I'll sort it out.

I also love that a new face has come along to shake things up at the top of the self-publishing world. I wish you continued success.

Thanks to Becca and VIOLA! Um, I just copied that whole KB entry into a word doc for my own personal use, since I'm starting a serial. (So excited!) Edited to add: Hey! Look at me! I'm a junior member now, too! Gotta lie down. All these exclamation points are making me woozy.
