I was just reading this. Such good stuff. Hope she doesn't take too much of a hit for it.

I hope not. It's incredibly generous. She's helping her own direct competitors.

Ohh, thanks. My next project is a serial, so I'm off to read in detail.

Is there difference between a serial and a series? (<------------- question that would ignite a 1000 duh's in that other place.)

Is there difference between a serial and a series? (<------------- question that would ignite a 1000 duh's in that other place.) Yeah. A series is a collection of linked full-length novels. They can be loosely linked, like your Hot series, or they can have plot connections like my series. But each one is a stand-alone work. A serial is a single work broken up into short pieces and issued in rapid succession. Each chunk might be pretty short, especially if it has a lot of sexytime. I think she said 10-20K words. But one thing Viola points out really helpfully is that even though the serial is one large work, each episode needs to have a little internal arc, so there's some satisfaction at the end, even though the major problem of the overall story remains resolved.

The level of thought, the attention to detail, and the accounting for all manner of factors that are present in that post are truly impressive. It's one of the best of its kind I've ever read on KB.

I agree. Viola rocks. And she's like 23, or something. Not to put too fine a point on it, but when I was 23, I was still seeing what the inside of my ass looked like. Good lord does she have her shit together.

Good lord does she have her shit together. Viola has an old soul. I guess when you face death and win, a certain amount of instaneous life lessons get instilled in you. I hope she rockets straight to the top and stays there. She deserves success. Unfortunately there are people out there who think no one deserves success if they haven't worked for umpteen years at it. I disagree. Life handed her lemons, and she made quick lemonade, thus any rewards she reaps is well-deserved. I wish we could wrap her in bubble-wrap and protect her from any meanies.

I freaking LOVE her. Can we steal her? Offer cookies and bourbon or something to come hang out with us?

I thought it was such a great post I had to drop her a line and thank her for writing it. If no one else has yet, I'll zip her an invite to the pub.

Okay, she's in the house. Everybody act cool. Oh, sugar, that's cute. You may need to act. I, of course, need only act natural.

I'm glad you guys found the thread useful. It seems weird, giving away all of that information, especially so early in my career, but I gave it a lot of thought. I think more people writing serials and writing them well will take away some of the stigma from them. I also think that every person's writing style is unique, and even if you asked two people to write an identical plot, the stories could be completely different. I don't think anyone could really copy what I could do, no more than I could copy any other author's work, so in the end, my primary competition is always myself.
And 99¢ boxed sets. God, I can't stand them >_<

I think more people writing serials and writing them well will take away some of the stigma from them. I hadn't thought of that. I think it's very likely true. For instance, I bet a lot of writers are not so careful to put a smaller arc inside each episode, so that the reader feels some satisfaction, even if they're itching for the next installment.
