We have Like buttons here (the little "thumbs-up" icon on every post), and I'm wondering what our members think about them. I've been using them because they let me show appreciation for a post when I have nothing new to add to the conversation. It's also nice to know when someone appreciates something you've posted.
Over on KB, the critics say that like buttons lead to cliques, popularity contests, and hurt feelings (when your post doesn't get a bunch of likes.) I don't see that happening here, but I suppose it could happen. Harvey and Co. decided not to put like buttons on KB but periodically review the subject.
I figure that if Like buttons are good enough for Facebook, they are good enough for our forum. Also, I don't think I've ever visited a forum that didn't have an, "I wish we had like buttons," comment on it somewhere.
What do you think?

I love the like button. As you say, it's a way to show appreciation when you don't have time to reply.

I think they're awesome. So many times I've read posts and just wanted to like them. I usually didn't comment, since they're often the off topic, humorous, or clever posts, not really relating to the OP, but a like button allows me to express my appreciation, without derailing the topic. I think it encourages more participation rather than less.

Anything that eliminates the needs for posts that simply say, "^^^THIS," is okay by me.

I think the person with the most likes at the end of the year should win a new cheese grater.

I think the person with the most likes at the end of the year should win a new cheese grater. You just said that to get more likes.

Only if the grater is one of those portable hand held models the size of a good knife. Handle (& knuckles) are far from the messy cheese.... ew! BTW, I 'like' the button, too. ~ Aithne p.s. It's nice to see you over here Daniel.

I think the person with the most likes at the end of the year should win a new cheese grater. This reminds me that I had one full night of magnificent dreams -- intricately woven plotlines, enough for several novels -- and all I could remember when I woke up was one line of dialog: "Somebody get me a grater for these carrots!" (I should have lied, and said it was cheese.) Oh, and I like the like button. It never occurred to me that it could be seen as a bad thing. Just feels like a fist bump to a post that I agree with or that makes me laugh, when I have nothing to add.

I think it's great and was surprised it wasn't added as part of the recent KB forum upgrade. I don't like the "karma points" or a "don't like" post, but just a nice "like" button like we have here is awesome. It's way of appreciating a post and saying thanks even if I don't have anything more to add to the conversation.

Yeah, there are a hell of a lot more posts I like than I click "like" on.

p.s. It's nice to see you over here Daniel. Ditto! I wasn't sure it was you, but then again, how many writers named Aithne do I know? Still just one, as it turns out.

Yeah, there are a hell of a lot more posts I like than I click "like" on. Same here. I'm most likely to remember when something makes me laugh out loud.

It's way of appreciating a post and saying thanks even if I don't have anything more to add to the conversation. I didn't like Karma Points either. That feature definitely seemed like a popularity contest, even though I don't think anyone treated it that way. I'm glad it disappeared with the ProBoards upgrade. And a thumbs down (dislike) button would not accomplish anything positive by definition.
