Interesting write up. Thanks for sharing.
For what it's worth, I had similar results in a free run a month ago. It was for a short story, so good luck in getting a site to advertise a freebie on it. Instead, I posted that it was free on my page and then spent five bucks promoting that post. I ended up with 6,500 downloads and made the Top 50 in the free store. For five bucks.
When I'm doing a big free push for one of my novels, I'll still use BookSend, BookBub, etc., but for promoting short stories or something that won't get picked up by the big guys, a promoted FB post can have some impact. I'm sure that this short story was helped by the fact that it was a sweet romance over Valentine's Day, with a fair # of reviews, but still, I was a little staggered by getting that # of downloads so cheaply.
