I was writing away this morning, forgetting what time and even what day it was... In the 'zone', you know? The doorbell rang at 10.45 am. (doesn't happen often in this isolated rural area). I opened the door and found my neighbor, staring at me in shock, horror. I was still in my dressing gown and furry slippers... I tried to explain to her that I get up at 7.30 and then sit down to write, never getting dressed until I have finished my writing stint. She didn't look as if she understood, convinced I'm real slovenly slut... People around here get up early to work on farms and with horses. You only stay in your pj's if you're very ill...

I envy you that, Suzy. I work a full time job in addition to writing, so I have to be showered and ready for work before I sit down at the laptop for the day. Good for you!

I'm getting visuals of Doris Day, locked out of the house in her robe in Send Me No Flowers.

One time, when my father was out to sea and my mother was a stressed 21-year-old first-time mother alone with a baby who wasn't gaining weight, the mailman rang the doorbell, and she answered it. Then she realized she was naked from the waist up -- she hadn't bothered with a shirt because my sister was nursing constantly. So, you know -- at least you were wearing a robe!

I'm so impressed by your productivity as a writer. I feel like my day job slows me waaaay down. (But it might more accurately be my inability to work around my day job effectively.) What sort of work do you do for your day job?

I'm getting visuals of Doris Day, locked out of the house in her robe in Send Me No Flowers. Doris Day? Not really my role model... Yes, Becca, the thought crossed my mind. But it's too cold to write naked. But in the summertime, I write dressed only in a string of pearls and my swansdown slippers.

Attagirl, Suzy. I expect nothing less of you. Don't forget the Chanel No. 5.

What sort of work do you do for your day job? I really feel like I've been slacking off and 2014 is the year I kick things into gear. My plan is to have four novellas/novels complete this year, along with four shorter works. Man plans, God laughs, so we'll see how I do! I am the Managing Broker of a small (18 agent) real estate office. In addition, I still sell homes for my already established clients. That keeps me fairly busy during the day time, but I get up early (5:30) to write and try to grab at least another hour or two in the evening. BTW... love the story of your Mom... you've gotta work that in to a story at some point!

Wow, I'm even more impressed, now. Four novels/novellas and four shorts in one year? Plus managing a real estate office? You must have gallons and gallons of energy! I'm just gonna pack up my WIP and send it to you to finish, 'k? Heh. I might try to use my Mom's story some time, but I think I like all my current female characters too much to do that to them. Talk about mortifying ....

No credit due yet... just one short and one novella (almost) done so far. Remind me of this post about December and we'll see how I did!
Managing the real estate office is easier than it sounds. I've been doing it a long time and so have most all of my agents, so it kind of runs itself now. There are gaps of time during the day when I can do a lot of my promotional stuff (and post on message boards!) so that frees up my mornings and evenings for writing. Easy peasy!
I think it helps that even my full-length books are pretty short - usually around 70k. I don't write doorstoppers.

I hear you, but I'm still thinking you must be very hard working and organized to stay on top of so many things. Kudos!
