I'm not a huge fan of spectator sports, preferring to do it rather than watch it. But the winter Olympics is very watchable. Of course, as my own country Sweden is doing so well right now, with a gold medal yesterday in the women's cross country relay and ditto for the men this morning, it's doubly enjoyable. Both highly exciting. Kudos to a small country up against giants. I also love watching the figure skating, especially ice dance which look very similar to ballet. And the super G, of course and the snow boarding. There is only one 'sport' that leaves me cold and that is curling. Sweden has always excelled in it but I never really understood it. Looks more like housework to me with all that scrubbing of the ice. Our hero!

Go Sweden!!! I went curling once. There was a curling club near where my sister lived in NY. It was sort of fun, but definitely weird.

I've watched the Winter Olympics in the past, but we don't have television now. I imagine I could stream it from somewhere, but I'm not up on the tricks for doing that. (We only recently got the bandwidth and download limits necessary to allow streaming.)

The only times I miss it are 1) sporting events and 2) major news events (the glued-to-CNN kind).

Haven't watched a single minute. Just doesn't interest me like it did when I was a kid. There's something too commercial about it these days, probably just my illusions as a kid that they were all amateurs.

There's something too commercial about it these days, probably just my illusions as a kid that they were all amateurs. I used to miss the amateur thing, too, but then someone pointed out to me that, in general, only quite wealthy people are able to dedicate themselves to amateur athletics extensively enough to achieve these levels of performance -- the "gentleman amateur." By opening the Olympics up to professionals, you open them up to less affluent people who need their sport to also be their job. Thinking about it that way changed my view of things quite a bit.

I watch snowboarding, some figure skating, and I did see some of the cross-country skiing. My favorite event is the halfpipe. But I've felt a little blah about the Olympics in general this year.

I'm just going to admit it: the halfpipe scares the living shit out of me.

Not really. We'll get the gold and hand you the silver with a smile.

Well, you have the advantage. It appears 3 of the four judges are... Canadian How did that happen?

Sorry about the brutality of that loss, Suzy. But we're good sportsmen, so we'll mail the Swedish team's souls back when we're done with them.
Hey, wait. I just looked at IKEA on-line...all the prices on .ca just doubled...

Vikings do it slowly and painfully But seriously, Canada played a superb game and the Swedes were a little limp. But hey, we got silver, not too bad at all.

It seemed like they cracked after that second goal. They just played on, accepting the inevitable.

Yes, they seemed somehow demoralised. They played so well during the first twenty minutes or so. But they had also lost their best player, who couldn't play that day so that must have had an effect.

Proud to say that I didn't watch a single second of the Olympics. I'm ready for real hockey to start back up. It's really annoying that they split the season like this, just so players can play in the Olympics. I wish they went back to college kids. Let the pros play in the NHL. At least Crosby and Kunitz for gold medals. They play for the good guys.
