I write romantic and/or mystery stories. Some with a paranormal twist. Some without.

I wish I knew the answer

It doesn't really matter if the paranormal stuff is ambiguous because mystery is the main category and the rest are nested under it. If your book is a paranormal mystery, it's going to be shelved in mystery first, then in the paranormal mystery and romantic mystery categories underneath as well. It's not an either/or thing when you're dealing with a nested system.

If your book is a paranormal mystery, it's going to be shelved in mystery first, then in the paranormal mystery and romantic mystery categories underneath as well. It's not an either/or thing when you're dealing with a nested system. And it gets worse. The categories are actually kind of a grid. You have Romance->Paranormal and Fantasy->Paranormal->Romantic. And you can rank in one path but not it's reflection. I have my doubts about how well this arrangement serves readers. In my experience, readers who enjoy speculative fiction are a definite subset of the larger reading population. For example, many romance readers have no interest in reading stories that include fantasy elements, so having paranormal stories show up under romance only frustrates them. In a sense, a paranormal mystery is paranormal first and a mystery second. (This same argument holds for erotica, BTW, which Amazon has done a better job of isolating.) IMO, Amazon's chaotic and duplicative category system is an example of taking a good thing too far. BISAC categories may be frustratingly insufficient at times, but I suspect they do a better job of serving readers.

Hi, Thanks for allowing me to join you! I am a freelance writer trying to turn the corner and be able to support myself through self pubbing. Currently, I am in the midst of completing a post-apoc trilogy and also working on an outline - very rough outline - for a thriller/mystery standalone.
I look forward to getting to know everyone in the future.
Thanks and Hello!

Hi, May! So is that SF/F post-apocalyptic, religious, political, or some other genre?

Thanks Suzy Viking queen, I'm honored! So, my name is Tanja and I'm from Stockholm, Sweden. I used to be a member here _yeeeears_ ago but then life happened and then I hit the wall. Two years ago I finally admitted to myself that I was burnt out and the first 6 months after that I barely left the bed. All I did was sleep, sleep and sleep. It's taken me 2 years to find my way back to life and to writing, and I'm so happy to say that this morning I finished my second short story for the month! *yay* Anyway, if there's anything else you'd like to know just ask! I'm really looking forward getting to know you guys.
