I'm very frustrated. I finally bought a new Kindle Fire, and tested side-loading my in-progress novel edit on it to test how the formatting looks. The book doesn't show up anywhere on the device for me to open. I can get it to show up in Docs if I put in in the Books or kindle folder, but if I try to open it, it gives the message "No Application available to view this file."
It's a mobi file that I created with Amazon's own Kindle Previewer app. Is anyone else running into this kind of problem side-loading Kindle files on the recent generation of Fire tablets?

Yes, we've also had problems side-loading to Kindle Fire. I did a bunch of Internet searches and finally found something that worked, but in a very convoluted way. It has been long enough now that I couldn't tell you exactly what the trick was. I remember that I couldn't put the file into the ebook folder--it had to be in docs, as you said. It still doesn't show up in the available ebooks list. I had to search for it, but I think I had to do that from a specific place. Sorry, this probably isn't very helpful.
I'll see if I can dig up our Fire and figure out what I did. I'll probably have to recharge it first (we don't like using it). In the meantime, you may be able to find the answer through searches.

Thanks, Daniel. I'll see if I can use that to narrow down my searching.
For the record, the "Docs" app is where it shows up when I put it in the Books or kindle folder. The problem is that the Kindle won't open it from there, and it doesn't show up in the list in the regular Kindle app.

You can download and try the send to kindle app or you can email it to your Kindle. The email is listed in your contents and devices area somewhere.

Tony Donadio - I just checked our Kindle Fire. It looks like I sideloaded into the Books folder, restarted the Fire, and then used the search feature (selecting "MY STUFF" as the library) to locate the book. The only listing view I've seen that actually shows the book is the RECENT list. It doesn't show up anywhere under the Books tab that I've found. SendToKindle also worked, but again, you have to use the search feature to locate the book. I have no idea where STK stores the book. I've looked through the device folders and can't find the one I sent anywhere under Documents or in the Books folder although I see other books I've copied to the Fire. Very strange.

Interesting. I've never even heard of "sideloading" a file.

Yeah, I don't think Smashwords tested their instructions either... The book will be ready to read? Sure ... if you can find it. They make it sound like the book will automatically be visible on your Fire, and let's just say that does not match my experience.

Thanks Daniel for the feedback. I have been including the Smashwords instructions on all my download pages, so need to find more meaningful instructions elsewhere and change the links to working instructions.

I think Amazon made some changes recently. I haven't had a problem with the send to Kindle app. The files end up in my downloads folder.

Downloads folder if I remember correctly.

I found them.
From Kindle Fire "home," you open the Docs app, which displays a "Documents" view. That view includes a Send-to-Kindle tab. If you click on that tab, you see the ebooks you sent to your Kindle using STK. If you open "Local Storage" instead, you can drill down into either the Books or Documents folder and see the files/ebooks you placed there via side-loading.
I was looking for an option on the top menu that would let me see the ebooks, but none of those worked. The key was finding the Docs app--I didn't see it because it was on the second page of apps. You'd think a programmer wouldn't have these problems, but I admit that I find the Mystery Meat Navigation of the Kindle Fire un-intuitive and frustrating. Half the time, when I'm trying scroll, it opens something instead. Then you have to get the timing just right to reveal the toolbar that will let you close the thing you accidentally opened. I'd say only about half of what I do on the Kindle Fire is intentional. I'm sure that would improve with practice and patience if I cared enough to put in the time.

I just drag and drop the icons of the things I use the most to where they're easiest to find. There's stuff I never use, so I don't keep that stuff on top.
