I have a new book waiting in my Kindle app right now. It's the latest by Grace Draven, one of my buy-everything-she-writes authors. I pre-ordered it, and it arrived on the 25th, but I haven't had time to finish the very good book I'm currently reading, so I can move on to Draven's. I have to say, though, there's a painful deliciousness in knowing it's waiting for me. Is there any more delightful feeling than knowing you have a much anticipated book at the top of your TBR pile??

That's the BEST! I have two and I'm holding myself back to start before I've finished the current one.

Even better is when your readers say that about YOUR books. Yes, it's happened to me, and yes, it thrills me right down to my toenails

I mean, steady on, this is CAKE we're talking about. I have to admit, this hasn't happened to me in a while. I think studying literature at university mortally wounded my ability to read for pleasure, and becoming an author myself finished the job. I used to read all the time and avidly follow my favourite authors, but now I just occasionally pick up whatever looks good at the library, and there's about a 50% chance I'll actually finish reading it. I hope I'll be able to get that excited about reading again someday. I suppose I'll just have to make do with cake in the meantime!

I know someone who, after quitting a doctoral program in literature, couldn't bring herself to read a word -- not even a magazine article -- for a full year. Fortunately for me, my literary studies only did in my willingness to read literary fiction -- genre fiction was untainted. Well, to be fair to my academic discipline, aging and an increasingly pessimistic view of the world might've caused or contributed to that change. Who wants to read depressing stuff when reality is depressing enough on its own? I want escapism, thank you very much!! P.S. Better than cake, but not better than cheesecake.

I love that feeling of anticipation although it doesn't always work out as well as I'd hoped. I'm with Victoria in that finding a good book, even by an author I used to love, had become difficult. I'm currently reading Bones Never Lie by Kathy Reichs. I just can't get into it. All of the characters feel like cardboard cutouts. I had been warned that Dr. Brennan is nothing like her counterpart on the television series, and I had no problem with that. But I did expect the books to engage me, and that hasn't happened. However, the book that is waiting for me in the wings right now is Pru Freda 's An Appetite for Murder, and I'm very much looking forward to it. I may have to give up on the Reichs book and indulge myself.

Or maybe being a KU member has just given me bad habits -- I start reading 10 times as many books as I finish, these days. The book I was anticipating turned out to be good ... phew.

Some folks seem compelled to finish any book they start, but I'm perfectly happy to set a book aside as soon as I realize I'm not enjoying it. However, I'll admit that I rarely spend much money on the books I read, so giving up on them costs me little. Most of my reading material is from used book sales, the library, or occasional Kindle deals. I almost never pay more than $5 for a fiction book, and my average is probably close to $2. If I were willing to cough up full price, I'm sure I'd be less likely to give up on the story.

I'm exactly the same way -- almost all the books I read are cheap or functionally free (through KU), so easy come, easy go.

Sincerely hope that you enjoyed it and, if it didn’t make you laugh out loud, at least that it made you smile.

I'm always thrilled when the library moves a book I've been on the waiting list for, to my loans section. I've got Gene Doucette's The Spaceship Next Door in as of this morning, and I can't wait for Rhys Bowen's latest Her Royal Spyness novel to be sent over.
