Life's Too Short is hilarious and there is a scene of Warwick Davis insulting Sting that cracks me up. He calls him a git or jit? What does that mean? You can see clip below:

Yes, it's a general term of (mild) abuse. It's pronounced, as Suzy said, with a hard "g" like get - of which it is a derivitive.
AFAIK, it is only applied to men never women, and often preceded by old: You old git, you stupid old git, you randy old git, etc.
Like a lot of other things, intonation is everything. Said in the right way, it can almost be an endearment you daft/silly (old) git.
