Ms. Hunter is one of Hugh's "people I want to hear from." She's not making a living with her books, but she earns enough to improve her quality of life. Hers is the real story that awaits the majority of us who have the stamina to keep writing.

That was nice of you to say. I gather you've read some of Hunter's work? I haven't, but then I'm not sure I could accurately compare my writing to another author's anyway.

I don't know why Hugh and Konrath push her stuff as hard as they do. They must be friends or something. I haven't read anything complete by her, but I've read all the look inside parts, and I don't find the Rune stuff drawing me in. There's something missing in the descriptions. The similes don't paint any clear pictures than the words would. Mundane details that SHOULD start the characterization, but don't do anything 60% of the time. That sort of thing. I dunno. It's not as if it's awful, but I wouldn't buy it. I start one of yours, I get someone waking up on their first day of wizard training, I get good description of my surroundings, boom, I'm in the MC's head and rocking and rolling.

Really interesting post. I find it strange how many people desire that pat on the head. So many! I never wanted it. I wanted books in people's hand (not even that fussed about print, to be honest, I just want someone to read my books), and a bit of money in exchange. As soon as I read about self publishing as a viable alternative, I was there! In fact, it was a relief to be able to skip the pat on the head. I've never been that keen on the praises of someone "knowledgable". I've always doubted whether most of them really were.

That was a great post! The lack of a "pat on the head" is the only thing that's ever really bothered me about self-publishing. It's been a real eye-opener to learn that getting it doesn't mean you can just lie back and watch the the royalties roll in and that tradpub authors still promote and worry and struggle. Also, I've been away from the board for a while so I don't know how new they are but holy crap, Rinelle Grey, the new covers for your Curse books are STUNNING!

Thanks She. I've had them for a while, but just updated my signature with the newer books/covers. I'm really slack. . I'm actually thinking about redoing them again soon, because even though they're pretty, they're probably not particularly representative of the genre.

To which I would only add--Once it's up, leave it up, and move on to the next book. You probably wont be able to improve it by taking it down and rewriting it. (i.e., "Do as I say, not as I do." )
