Publishers Weekly had an interesting article about how thriller author Steve Hamilton pulled his latest book from St. Martin's Press just before publication because he didn't feel they had a decent marketing plan for it: Hamilton Ends Deal with SMP Claiming Lack of SupportThe book had made it to the point where it was done and getting pre-release reviews. Hamilton gave back all the money SMP advanced him and is shopping print rights and film rights. The article didn't say anything about ebook rights, which I thought was interesting. Is Hamilton about to pull a Howey?

Very interesting. He's one of my favorite authors in the genre. Hmmm, considering he's one of the few who doesn't use ghosts and think I don't notice, or phone it now, and has politely not died, he probably is my very favorite author in the genre.

FYI, Hamilton apparently had no trouble finding a new publisher. He had 10 publishers bid on his contract and Putnam won. He is getting another 4-book contract worth more than the near-seven-figure contract he had with St. Martins' Press. Hamilton Lands New Deal at PutnamIt shows how much Hamilton wanted to ditch SMP that his agent paid $250,000 (in addition to Hamilton repaying his advance) to get him released from the contract. Yowza.

Nice wake up call to his original publishing house, though. They've been taking the lion's share from authors for dumping books into their "system" basically and then seeing what rises to the top. It's fairly half-assed when you think about it.

Nice wake up call to his original publishing house, though. I thought so, too. SMP is going to have to watch some other publishing house make a bunch of money off the books, knowing that they dropped the ball so badly a high-selling author abandoned them in disgust. That won't make other authors too excited about setting up deals with them either. "Well, if they couldn't manage to promote Hamilton, what would they be willing to do for little old me?"
