I don't use my husband as an alpha since I love him and killing him would be bad for our marriage. Hehe. Same here. He is great as a final proofreader though! I admit, I pay an editor to do a first pass. She always manages to either pick up the things I deep down knew were a problem but didn't want to fix, or has perfect suggestions to fix the things I couldn't figure out how to fix. Then my sister does a beta read, and that's mostly it for me. I've tried more passes, but I tend to just be ready to throw the book at the wall if I go over it too many times.

I have a process I trust now, but by the time I finish my final read-aloud proof pass, I'm so ready to be done with the book. By then, it's the best I can produce at that time. I started with beta readers on my first book because I didn't feel comfortable with the idea of sending my work straight out into the public. Once I learned how valuable their feedback was, I vowed to use beta readers for every book. Alpha/beta readers also helped me learn to love revision because I'm always amazed at how much better I like the resulting story.

Agreeing that those final proofreading passes through the book are agonizing. Each one takes me a solid four days. Hideous.

My editor says that when you want to vomit on the book, that's when it's truly finished. And here I was thinking that I had eight unfinished novels--by this test they were all finished long ago, even my current WIP. Thank heaven for that.
