I tried scdaffron's tip of writing with ear plugs today and it did wonders for my productivity. I wrote 1,719 words, which is a lot more than I've been able to muster most days lately. I'm not sure I would have been able to wear ear plugs all morning if I hadn't found some comfortable ones. The brand I'm using is Quiet Time. You get 10 pairs in a box and they are inexpensive. The plugs are purple, have the shape of a rounded cone, and are made from an exceptionally soft, dense foam. Honestly, you'd probably laugh at me if you visited our house and observed how "noisy" it is that ear plugs would make any difference. We have no road noise, no kids, and two dogs that spend most of the day sleeping. The loudest sound in the house is my typing. Still, there's something about the sensory isolation that seems to help. I often get a similar boost from listening to music, but tunes can also be distracting.

Hmm. I think I would find the feeling of earplugs distracting, and I also like to be alert to what's going on around me (since I do have those 2 kids and husband to track etc.), but I like it to be quiet.
Some day I may master the art of writing with other people in the house, but that day was not today.

I honestly don't know how you and other author-parents manage to get any writing done at all. My hat is off to you!

Daniel, I've been looking for earplugs that I can wear for noise distraction and Google hangouts. I've tried three different brands and they all make my ears ache. I have tiny little elf ears, like a pixie, lol. The ear doctor has to use infant tools for examinations. I went into the electronics department and asked the salesperson if they had earbuds for babies...he looked at me and said, "No... Does your baby like to jam?" Still looking if you come across some itty bitty ones!

I look like a refugee from 1998 on Google Hangouts, but at least I don't get a headache As far as ear plugs, the type Daniel mentioned (purple foamy ones) can be cut with scissors. I cut the ends off, so they don't fall out of my ears at night. (I also wear ear plugs to sleep because my husband snores REALLY loudly.) There's no reason you couldn't trim the sides of the ear plugs too if you needed them to be thinner.

Still looking if you come across some itty bitty ones! I think we are talking about two different things. When I say ear plugs, I mean PLUG, as in, blocking noise entirely. I think you are talking about ear buds for listening to music. I've had trouble with those too for extended periods, but I've never spent the money for good ones. The thing that has worked best for me so far is a sort of ear bud headset. The speakers are buds that sit inside your ear, but they are joined across the top of your head like a regular headset. The buds don't have to nestle (between your tragus and antitragus), so they don't ache over time. The slight pressure the head band puts on the speakers can cause a different ache (in your cavum conchae), but you can adjust the headband to solve that problem.

I will give it a try. It's so frustrating trying to sleep with him that I normally stay up all night until he gets up at 5, then I go to bed. Lately, I've been trying to sleep at same time and it makes me want to smother him in his sleep. Yeah...it's that bad.

Daniel, youre right...I was talking about the ear buds. I have tried the plugs and they pop right out. I'll try cutting them. I have tried the over-the-head but can't stand something on my noggin.

That's like the opposite of us. I go to bed with the kids at early o'clock, and sometimes get up when my husband is going to bed. He says I snore, but admits that he does, too.

Since I live in the middle of nowhere typical city/people noises in hotels made it hard to sleep. At some point, the light dawned and I realized I could sleep with earplugs at home too. I could not believe what a difference getting good sleep made. It's quite possible I was tired all the time because I was waking up in the middle of the night repeatedly. Probably for years. Anyway, that's the long way of saying, yup, I believe you

I have to wear ear plugs. (Actually, it's the ear protection I wear to the shooting range. The wife hates it when I go into the other room to work, because then I can't fetch her drinks, so I sit in the loveseat right next to the TV. It helps a little, but I'd still prefer no headset and a quiet house.

I use the soft purple ear plugs for everything now, including when I'm on the tractor, using a chain saw, or running tools in my wood shop. I still have my big ear-muff-style protectors, but rarely use them. The ear plugs are particularly helpful when you need to wear a hood because you're clearing snow from the road, it's 20 degrees outside, and a stiff wind is blasting the snow from the blower chute back into your face. Good times.

When I was in shape and running, I don't snore. Now that I've packed on the weight the snoring is back in full force and my poor wife is ready to smother me in my sleep. I need to lose the pounds for both our sakes.

I tell ya, I really like hitting the machines and looking back after I get off and seeing the youngsters have to take weight off. My characters have gotten bolder since i started lifting again. And the wife appreciates it, if you know what I mean...wink wink wink.

My Dad had quadruple bypass surgery and the nurse looked at me and said, ahem, you know this runs in the family. I started to eat better, smaller portions, cut out sugar and fast food and started to exercise and I lost 86 pounds. I just did the basic exercises they had has doing non-stop when I was in the Army National Guard: push ups, sit ups, and running. I haven't gotten that overweight in over ten years now, but I need to lose 20-30 pounds.
