Just to let you know in case you ever do what I did. I repackaged my series recently from romance to cozy mystery which involved changing the series name and then I screwed up and spelled series wrong--missed the last e--so I changed it and because the names were truncated in the drop down menus for when you are choosing a series name when you upload a new book, I asked them to removed the mistake as well as the old series name. Sounds reasonable. But the way things work, the sales history is attached not only to the title but also to the series name so I lost all sales records attached to those series titles. OR all sales history prior to April 20 when I discovered the mistake and changed it. I will still get paid for the sales but according to my dashboard, they never existed. Guess who freaked out this afternoon when she opened her dashboard.

I can live with losing the data since I keep a very detailed spreadsheet...long as they show me the money

I don't get D2D sales. My iBooks free downloads show up just fine, but nothing from B&N, even though I'm pretty sure I've had downloads...

Good grief! D2D need to do something about that. Every book should have a unique identifier that is independent of its title, and every series should have the same. Your sales history should be attached to the unique identifier, not metadata. I thought the D2D guys were smarter than that. At the very least, your old history should be made available under the old name.

It was until I asked them to delete the old names because I couldn't tell which one I was picking when I uploaded the new book. It is not the best setup and she said the accounting department was at the heart of it. I will make a spreadsheet adjustment but it is making me think about buying a Mac mini or something so I can go direct.

I will make a spreadsheet adjustment but it is making me think about buying a Mac mini or something so I can go direct. I've considered that too, but when I do the math, it's hard for me to justify (Your economics may differ substantially) ... Mac Mini: $600 minimum to get a CPU, keyboard, and mouse (but no monitor). If I add a cheap monitor and HDMI cable, it's more like $750. Cost of doing business through D2D: For a $2.99 book, royalties are $2.10, of which D2D gets $0.32. Break even point: At $2.99, I'd have to sell 1,875 books before I'd lose $600 in D2D distribution fees. My publishing company has 13 books listed with D2D. Most months, we sell fewer than 5 copies through Apple. It would take me at least 30 years to earn back the cost of that Mac Mini, which has a useful lifetime of maybe 5 years. However, Susan's Alpine Grove series has unexpectedly taken off on iTunes this month. If that continues, the economics will change for us and I'll consider overcoming my resistance to buying an Apple product. If Apple weren't so in love with itself and its closed-system attitude, they would just put together a web-based publishing portal like everyone else. Problem solved.

Used Minis sell on eBay for around 100 fairly frequently. I would not buy new because of finances and a complete disinterest in actually using it for anything other than this purpose. I've got keyboard and monitor, there are dongles that let you use various monitor types so that's easy enough. Been seeing used Macbooks on Craigslist for under $200 and I've heard that going direct with Apple tends to result in more sales for some reason.
It's tempting but I'm still undecided. If I can get outfitted for under $200, I might pull the trigger. Otherwise, can leave it as is.

Not sure if this is true...but if you're thinking of going direct, Annie Jacoby said do it before your books take off, as she lost all her reviews when she pulled from D2D to go direct!

That's a good point. I don't think I have enough to worry about right now. I switched over my paid books on Nook and didn't lose my reviews but I contacted them first to ask how they preferred I go about the change. They had me put the books up direct and then they transferred everything, I guess, then I unpublished on D2D. I doubt if the same thing would work with iTunes, though.
