D2D recently announced that you can set your price to free at B&N and that you can set a future release date to enable pre-orders. Also, the royalty rate is new 60% regardless of price point. The main down-side of the new interface is that they will update B&N sales figures daily instead of hourly, and it will take longer (24-48 hours) for new titles to get through B&N's "internal process." Sounds like a reasonable trade-off to me!
D2D now supports free and pre-orders through all channels. That's good news for anyone who wants to make their books perma-free and is not a fan of Smashwords.

I'm thinking that, now that D2D can do permafree at B&N, going through them for most of the non-Amazon venues makes a lot of sense. I know they take a percentage of earnings, but it would probably be worth it to me, given that they do such a great job of formatting (at least, that's what everyone says) and you can individualize the back matter for each venue.

I just use them for Apple, and I do my own EPUB, but I've also heard good things about their formatting. Even though I don't use them for much, I like the organization and the portal much better than I liked Smashwords.

Uploading is easy, the books are published promptly, and they pay on time.

I use them too - I can't go direct to either Apple or B&N - but I only have one book with them so far, and I've never sold anything through them. Perhaps when the 2nd in my series is out things will pick up, but I don't intend going free until I have the 3rd one out.
