Having the ending in mind always does it for me. When I was a young boy, I lived on a horse farm and would go out with my dad to collect the horses from their pasture. They would balk until they saw the barn... and supper. Then, we couldn't keep up with them. I'm the same way once I see the ending in sight. Yeah, I saw the same phenomenon with my uncles' cows and sheep. I used to love staying on my grandma's farm. I loved it when they butchered a hog. I think that watching it strung up upside down to bleed out into a bowl prepared me for being a writer. Growing up on a farm, I saw a lot of slaughter, of course, and we often hung them to bleed out. I don't remember collecting the blood in a bowl, though? Did I miss out on some ritual that might have made me a bestseller by now?

No, Shawn, it needs to be a unicorn's blood (or a virgin's, they're in equally short supply).

Nothing goes to waste in the old country. We Czechs were a poor lot. Couldn't afford to throw anything away.

Well, apparently it depends upon what you are feeding your mind. I had an ending in sight, and I kept writing slower and slower the closer I got to it. I thought I was just sad to end the trilogy, but that wasn't it. The truth was that I didn't like the ending. The day before yesterday, I had an epiphany. My new ending is fundamentally the same, but I changed how it comes about. All it took was one simple question: "But what if she DID betray them?" After that, everything fell into place and I've been cruising again.

Hmm, contemp, eh? You might have to update your avvy. I'm curious as to which direction you went. But you're not talking about it so.... All will become clear soon. I'll expand on my hint by saying it's a contemporary, paranormal, rural (as opposed to urban) fantasy. The cover was done by Victorine Lieske, and I think she did a fabulous job for me. As soon as Vaetra Unleashed goes off to beta readers, I'll do a reveal and take my first stab at a description for the new story. As for my avatar, that's part of my brand now, so I probably won't change it. I'd look silly in one of those chin-resting-on-fist shots anyway. Only Butcher can pull that off.

On Rock 'n Roll Heaven, I couldn't decide for the life of me what to do with Jimmy after the concert in heaven. I was toying with the idea of Buddy ascending to a different part of heaven, or playing with what RnR Heaven would be with new music, but I couldn't get anything straight in my mind. Then my wife asked me, "What would Jimmy do if he had the chance to go back to earth?" I wrote the rest in about two days. I love that feeling when everything finally becomes clear.

It's the most fun one can have without breaking the law. I get pretty animated when it happens. I can't stay in my chair. There are usually air punches and some embarrassing dance moves. Then I run into my wife's office and stop with both feet stomping the ground like a five year old. "Guess what? I just..." You get the idea.
