Over On KB (there's no WHOKBSOBK rule here, is there?) a moderator had to lock a thread because they were arguing. Like, you know, on a forum or a board or something. The chutzpah of some people. I saw that, too, and died laughing. OMG - arguing? Right there, in public??? *fans self* Honestly, the time to lock a thread is when everyone is in agreement. That's when there's no further need for exchange. ^^^Brilliant!

(there's no WHOKBSOBK rule here, is there?) Nope. We've had many WHOKB posts. Just keep in mind that some of the people on KB end up over here, not that we let in THOSE people (you know the ones I mean).

IMO, the twisted and hilarious exchange between L.L. and LeeBee is exactly the kind of thing that made KB a cooler place in the past.

Very pro-argument, here, obviously. Civil argument, of course.

Very pro-argument, here, obviously. Civil argument, of course. We don't have arguments here, we have discussions or even debates. Debating is something that is very much encouraged in schools over here. Every secondary school and college has a debating team. The Irish are especially good at debating.

The Irish are especially good at debating. That's what they're calling whiskey-fueled brawls now, is it? "Irish debating"?

On a more serious note, I think it's something you have to start doing at a young age and you have to learn to do it in a methodical way. I can remember some teachers setting up debates over "current events" all the way back in elementary school. But it never went overly well because, in retrospect, we didn't really practice debating by rules and we didn't spend any time on rhetoric. The teacher ad hocked it, leaving the free-for-all to emerge and then get summarily shut down because a free-for-all emerged. Done right, however, it would've been an excellent learning tool because it covers both good habits (self-restraint, research) and good skills (writing and logical thinking).

My sons went to a Jesuit school and had a classical education, just like my husband. It turned them into confident, rounded young men who are doing well in life as a result. And they can handle themselves in most situations, even on Internet forums, where you can meet the most aggressive, toxic people. I could have done with some of that. It would have helped a lot when I encountered toxic individuals on the Internet as I went into e-publishing. My husband is a political analyst and spends a lot of time blogging on political forums, which are notoriously nasty. But his debating skills help him cope with the worst trolls. Debating should be on the curriculum in every school.
