I stop myself all the time because I ask myself, "Self, do you want what you're about to say to be pulled up by someone in 5 years? No? Walk away!" If I took the time to ask myself that question, I would remain silent all the time. |

How often do you start writing something on a message board and stop yourself because you want to use it in a WIP? At least once a week, I type something and say, no, wait, let's not give that one away for free. NOOOO Fred! Keep those posts coming! I copy every one of your posts and use them as dialogue of one of my characters in book 3. He's this witty, hilarious middle-aged dude who tries to come off as an asshole, but is really a marshmallow inside. Don't leave me hanging now... I need you! |

At least once a week, I type something and say, no, wait, let's not give that one away for free. NOOOO Fred! Keep those posts coming! I copy every one of your posts and use them as dialogue of one of my characters in book 3. He's this witty, hilarious middle-aged dude who try's to come off as an asshole, but is really a marshmallow inside. Don't leave me hanging now... I need you! Wow... I'm doing the SAME THING. |

I had to breakout out my cop-zombie-killer suit just to defend myself while you and Fred have been...wait. Where have you and Fred been and what are you doing with him?! He's claimed. Twice! (Um, 3 times if you count Mrs. Vrab--a polite nod to the Mrs...) Moderate, I say! I demand moderating! As to the original question... I doubt I'd hesitate to post something for fear of it being stolen. I haven't really been in that position yet but the way I see it, I'm weird. If I posted the basic premise of a story or a chapter - supposing it DID get snagged... the results would be two entirely different stories. I would actually be very interested to see what the differences were.
I ended up taking part in something very much like that, actually. Someone on another site contacted me and requested a story. I was given the description of the two main characters and outline of the story. Not something I normally agree to but I was in the mood for a challenge so I went with it. After I finished I went to send a message to the one who requested it and saw that someone else had sent one saying the story request was done. Curious, I went to check and discovered that multiple people were given the same basic story to write.
I'm still not entirely sure how irritated to be about that but chose to read all of them and I was quite surprised with the variety people managed to come up with using the same general story. (I also cringed and almost had to stop reading a couple times - not everyone asked had... umm.... creativity.)
That might actually be a fun game to start. LOL
I DO stop myself from making posts and responding quite a bit, though. I'll look back over what I wrote and realize I didn't actually say anything or that it wasn't worded right and I need to think on it a bit more.
Yeah... I know... a lot of that slips through, anyway. LOL I do try to only respond if I have something to say, though. If someone else says it better, I usually just Like their post and move along.

I stop myself from making around 50% of all posts on KBoards. It's pretty terrible. If I feel like someone has given an OP particularly bad advice, I'll sometimes PM them and say "Don't listen to that person!!!" but usually I just shake my head and go back to writing. I hear ya, Viola. I stop myself from posting a lot these days. I'd rather just walk away from a thread then waste my time arguing with an author(s). It's not worth it to me. I've got better things to do. |
