Are you doing any promotion, Becca? And are you reconsidering the permafree strategy in the light of the last three month's figures?

I both am and am not promoting, Lynda. I haven't promoted Nolander itself since it went permafree, but it's in a couple boxed sets that C. Gockel is managing, and those are promoted every month (all the authors split the costs). Most of my sell-through must come from those.
I have to admit, KU2 is a pretty major draw. If I were depending on my writing for my income, I'd probably go into KU. Since I'm not depending on that money, I'm free to keep serving the 25% of my readers who are outside the Amazon ecosystem. It's sort of painful, though. Solatium is pretty long. It'd generate a nice KU pay-out, if read through.
If I ever do finish that PNR I worked on in the spring, I'll put it in KU.

Wow, Becca - did you get 6,885 sales of Solatium in one month, just from 341 downloads of the permafree??

Wow, Becca - did you get 6,885 sales of Solatium in one month, just from 341 downloads of the permafree?? I wish, Hsin-Yi! The 6,885 number is a year's worth of sales. Or maybe 13 months' ... can't remember if I published it at the beginning or end of November 2014. ETA: The 341 number is November 2015's sales of Solatium. I'm no longer tracking permafree downloads of Nolander, since the vast majority of them are coming from boxed sets, and I'm not privy to those numbers.

Oh, sorry, Becca - that was probably me being stupid! Still, I always thought you had such good sell-through that maybe you kept it up! It's still a fantastic number, I think, even for a whole year - just with 2 books out and the permafree not promoted much. Interestingly, my permafree on my TENDER series - which has really dropped to low 2 digits daily without promo - seems to be producing much better sell-through now, from the lower organic downloads, than from the higher - but artificially boosted - numbers earlier in the year.

Yeah, I think the organic downloads do produce much higher sell-through. Too bad they tick along at such a low level. I haven't promoted Nolander itself much at all, but the boxed sets it's in have been very heavily promoted. Sell-through from those is VERY low, but they've been distributed in such quantities that it's helped a lot anyway. I think this is my major take-away: if you have a good but sort of weird book, you need to get it out there very widely to capture that small percentage of readers who will like it.

I will admit to feeling the pull of KU. I guess I'll stay wide until the third novel is out and then reassess.

I just pulled Rings out of permafree on the 12th and popped it into Select because organic downloads dropped below a certain threshold. There's been no major downturn of sales on the rest of the books in the last 5 days and I've made a little extra income on Rings.

If you go to KU, remind me, so I can retweet and repost on my FB timeline, if you're there. That first month for me was dizzying in its grandness, and my suspicion now is that the first month all-in in popular genres (romance, PA, SF of the Gallactica sort, Cozies) will get you a big number...and I suspect bigger if you treat it like a promotion. Happy to help spread the word when you do that. (It's only 90 days. Give it a go before the payout drops more!)

Thanks for the input, Laura and Lou, and for the offer of promo help, Lou -- so kind! Unfortunately, it'd be hard to go into KU with Nolander, as it's in two free collections. I was thinking more of leaving it on permafree but putting later novels in the series into KU. I was hoping KU users would see the later books, realize the first book was already free, and go for them all. Do you guys think that would work??

I've had Rings permafree and the rest in KU until just a few days ago. And then, in a fit of perversity, I've just gone in and unclicked auto renew for the whole Psychic Seasons series. I'm debating taking it wide again in May and wanted to give myself the option. I meant to decide in Feb but the dates went right by before I remembered. We'll see what happens with the books over the next 90 days or so.

I'll be interested in seeing Laura's answer to this. I have some graphs I can share from my move to KU with the Vaetra Chronicles. Maybe we need a new thread on the subject since this thread is public.

It's only been a few days but I haven't noticed a decrease in sales and I don't have any promo scheduled for the series until Earthbound Bones comes out so all the books are ticking along at a few sales a day. My average daily income is up, though, just from the sales and pagereads from Rings so I guess that's fine. I'll give it the 90 days and see what happens. My guess is that it won't do much different since unpromoted permafree downloads dropped to an average of 25 a day. I'm hoping KU gives a bit more visibility than that. So far it's status quo. I agree with Daniel, we should do a thread on our experiences with KU.

Thanks for the info, Laura! I'll start a thread in the Snug querying for experiences. I am curious ...
