Huh, hadn't thought of that! It seems like a really good idea to put some bad words in there early. That way readers who don't like cussing will know it's not the book for them and won't buy it. That works for the readers who bother to read the excerpt. From the discussions we've had on KB in the past, I get the impression that most readers don't. Hey, that sounds like a good subject for a new thread.

See, I don't get that. Why the hell would you buy a book you haven't sampled? It's not like wine where you typically don't get to pop the cork in the store and try it first. I test drive every car before buying. I test every mattress before buying. I try on shoes before buying. Maybe people think books are like underwear, as long as you know the size, you can be pretty sure it's gonna fit you.

When I used to shop for books in a book store, I always picked a random chapter in the first third of the book and started reading to see what the writing was like. Now I check out the online excerpt.

Coming back to the original tpic, my hero is a rough, tough Scotsman. He *really* wouldn't say 'fruitcake' instead of the f-word. He doesn't say it a lot, only when provoked (like me )

Good for the Scotsman! Yeah, I also wouldn't buy a book without sampling, unless I was continuing a series.

Yeah. I figure I cuss early and often enough in the WIP that any reader who checks out the sample ain't gonna be surprised. I will accept the consequences of the transgression. Huh, hadn't thought of that! It seems like a really good idea to put some bad words in there early. That way readers who don't like cussing will know it's not the book for them and won't buy it. My last book featured an abortion as a main part of the story. There was no way to avoid it, it was a true story and absolutely the key moment in the book. I chose to lift it out of the middle of the book and put it in the first chapter so that readers who looked at the "Look Inside" would see that was part of the book and not be bushwhacked by it later. I expected some blowback, but it never came.
