He left her. He was a cad and a gambler. He made her pregnant when she was only 20 and then ran off to America. She borrowed money from her sister and followed him. She found him in New York. Then they got married,had the child and then another and then he ran. You have to read the story it's amazing.

My maternal grandmother was a flapper. She modeled underwear in NYC in the 1920s. When she died, another of my older relatives swore she'd been a communist. It's funny what young people don't see or know about older people.
