Sometimes characters just show up but if I'm just wanting a random challenge, my husband and I wrote a character generator years ago... it was originally intended to spit out easily rounded NPCs for D&D but I've started altering the purpose a bit. The original is fantasy themed but I've started working on an urban fantasy theme (reduces the number of races and boosts the list of qualities. Plus adding an occupation field.) I have the most fun trying to find reasons for characters to have odd combinations of qualities, flaws and quirks. That sounds like fun. Have you used any of the characters in your fiction? A few have ended up in short stories and snippets, a few have inspired less-fantastic characters. Some actually did find life in something bigger... a rather ambitious project I've been working on with another writer. We did a nearly 2 year long fantasy role play through email with each of us running two or three characters in a party. Then because we are of questionable sanity, we decided it would be awesome if we took the logs and wrote it all out from the perspective of each of the four main characters. It really has been a lot of fun reading the thoughts of her characters and she has gotten a kick out of seeing what was going on in the minds of mine. Eventually I'll finish... I've got the first few chapters written for each one but a different story has been a bit more pusy. LOL Eventually I'll have to find webspace where I can upload my character making toy. It's all javascript so doesn't take much.

I want to finish mine regardless of whether she gets hers done (though I have refused to send her further chapters until she gets caught up. Hehehehe!) That's one of those things... Once we have at least one of hers done as well as one of mine, we will send it to a few folks and see how they react - whether the story is as interesting to those who weren't direct participants. Reactions from the test crowd will determine whether we look seriously in to publishing.

I dreamed the Misfits years ago, so I dunno what weird part of my brain they came out of. Others I play around with. I like diverse characters, though I throw in a quirky character or two. Most of my heroines are ethnically diverse. My current hero is a genius with dwarfism. He's a bit like Tyrion except I hadn't heard of Game of Thrones when my brain dreamed him up. One of my favorite male characters is a Cockney MI6 agent who has an answer for everything. Maybe not a serious answer, but he always has to run some sort of commentary on the situation. He also does really bad American accents (whether or not that is on purpose is anybody's guess... ).

Mine just show up. I get an idea for a story, then I start by putting my hands on the keyboard and ask the MC to tell it. They do, including who they are and how they look, and they bring in other characters.
