I've thought about it. It's easy to install, but to get things going on a forum is tough. If I set one up it would be a ghost town, but it is something I would consider if I become more popular. Keeping your readers on your site's own forum is genius versus keeping them engaged on someone else's sandbox like Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook.

I'd feel lame if I started one and nobody came. But if people did start talking to one another, they way they are doing a teensy bit on my Am author page, that would be fantastic.

I love forums, but I think that it would be pretty empty if you weren't as big as someone like Hugh. But you could do something like a cbox. You'd just have to keep a close eye on it for spam.

I'm just thinking: Who'd want to discuss my books? And: trolls. And: time. And effort. And: embarrassment if nobody came.

Many moons ago I setup a forum, I can't even remember what it was about, but this before Facebook, Twitter, and all that. Anyway, sure enough no one visited and it fizzled off. I forgot all about it, but it was still up and running. A year or two later I get an email notification that I'm about to run out of bandwidth in the domain that I had the forum. I thought it was a mistake since the forum was dead. Well porn traders found it and they were using to post their porn pictures. And I'm talking about really hardcore stuff that would even make Fred blush. It was crazy. I had to delete the entire domain to get rid of it. So yea, if you leave it alone, the spammers and worse will find you.

There is something called an Akismet key you can apply to block spam. But I'm only in first grade when it comes to running a forum. I'll see if I can find out though...

But not that often. I hope Proboards can protect us from anything worse.

It'd be pretty fun to have a busy forum and watch readers speculate on your books. You can do that a little by by looking at public Kindle comments.

I've run several forums before, and I like the idea of engaging with readers in my own sandbox. However, if readers were interested in discussing my books on a public forum, they'd already be doing it somewhere. They aren't. That leads me to conclude that I don't have a large enough audience to make such a project worthwhile. If I ever do find that readers want to discuss my books, I might reconsider. For now, I've got enough other things to work on.

Hell's teeth, I can't even get people talking about my books on my Facebook page - what chance they'd do so on a website forum? I have 64 like on FB - not all of them known to me (and some decidedly dodgy ones) - and I can't seem to get any engagement going. I ask questions and they're ignored. I post comments that people turn a blind eye to, and links that no one clicks. Sometimes I think I'm just talking to myself.
